Ordination of Fr Alan Griffiths
to the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham
Thursday 28 June 2012
On Thursday 28 June 2012, Bishop Alan Hopes came to celebrate the Vigil Mass of Saints Peter and Paul. At that mass he ordained Deacon Alan Griffin to the priesthood. Deacon Alan is a member of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham. The Ordinariate was established by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict, to gather together members of the Anglican Church who were desirous to become Catholics. It has meant that over 60 Anglican priests and 1200 laity have been received. Deacon Alan was an Anglican Priest in the city of London and will now help look after the Ordinariate group that meets in central London. As the Ordinariate do not have their own Church, St Mary's extended hospitality to them for this Ordination.
During the Mass, their own Ordinary, Monsignor Keith Newton, formally requested Bishop Alan to ordain Deacon Alan. The Mass on Thursday was a Solemn High Mass and our own Latin Choir sang Palestrina's Missa 'Tu es Petrus', the Litany of Saints, the Veni Creator, Luca Marenzio's 'O Sacrum Convivium' and a number of hymns selected by the Ordinariate.
