Music at St Mary's

St Mary's has a long tradition of Choral Music since its foundation. Research revealed that the Mass sung at the Consecration of the new Church in 1892 had been Weber's 'Mass in G' -- and the current Latin Mass Choir recreated that for the Mass celebrated by Cardinal Basil Hume in 1998, marking the Bicentenary of the founding of the Parish.

The Latin Mass Choir

The Latin Mass Choir has maintained its existence, throughout the decades, singing in Latin at the Solemn / Latin Mass on a Sunday Morning and also for all the major Liturgical Feasts. Members are all amateurs, fortunate to be led by a professional Director of Music, Timothy Teague, appointed in April 2015, and are keen to maintain the Catholic Liturgical Choral Tradition which has existed through the centuries but remains now, sadly, at only a few Catholic Cathedrals and major Churches.
While this Sunday Mass is a Novus Ordo one, the choir also arranges the Solemn Mass in the Extraordinary Rite (Tridentine) which has been held annually at the Church, in August, since 1998.
The choir has a continually expanding repertoire which stands currently at over 50 Mass settings and 200 Motets from all periods and including Renaissance to Modern composers.

The Choir is always looking for new members.

Music at the 1000hrs Family Mass

The 1000hrs Sunday Family Mass includes singing hymns and settings of the Ordinary of the Mass for all the Congregation, supported by the organ. Children form the majority of this choir and, if your children would like to join us, they are very welcome! We just ask that they be old enough to read the lyrics and to remain focused for the duration of the Mass. The average age is 7 to 12 years old at the moment. We also always need adults to support the children (help them find the right hymn, show them Church etiquette, etc) and provide the musical backbone, so if you know the hymns or enjoy singing, please join us also!

Just come along any Sunday and introduce yourselves to Olfa Meliani (the choir leader) or to Colin Coleman (the organist) . You will be made most welcome!

For more information, please contact Olfa Meliani by clicking on the name.

Sunday Evening Choir at the 1830hrs Mass

The 1830hrs Mass Choir is made up of people from various cultural backgrounds. It plays both traditional & contemporary Catholic hymns as well as Ecumenical Taizé music with guitar and other musical instruments. It meets every Sunday at 1730hrs to prepare for the Mass and is always happy to receive new singers and musicians at all level.
The Choir is very proud to be the initiators of St Mary’s Carol Service that is now a tradition in our Church and in 2009 saw the attendance of around 400 parishioners.
If you would like to participate in our evening choir or the next Carol Service, contact Anna or come along to the rehearsal at 1730hrs on Sunday.
