Ordination of Jeffrey Downie to the Diaconate Saturday 23 June 2012
At our Westminster Cathedral on Saturday morning 23rd June, Archbishop Vincent conferred the order of Deacon on Jeffrey Downie. A large number of Jeffrey's family, friends and parishioners were present and Canon Stuart and Fr Anthony, as part of the ceremony, formally vested Jeffrey with the stole and dalmatic of his new office.
Canon Stuart writes:
the 10am and 6.30pm Mass on the following Sunday, as shown in the pictures in the slideshow above, Deacon Jeffrey exercised his Liturgical function as a deacon of the Holy
Catholic Church for the first time. The Deacon’s role at Mass is to proclaim the Gospel, pray with the people, prepare the altar,
encourage the peace amongst the people of God prior to their communion and finally to dismiss us. The order of
Deacon is above all else an order of service. In the New Testament we read of them as being the ones who “serve
at table and care for the widows and those in need.” They are the right hand men of the bishop and the Presbyters
(hence their liturgical place of sitting at the right hand of the Celebrant.) Through his Ordination, Deacon Jeffrey
has entered into the clerical state. He has made a vow of obedience and celibacy. It will be his calling to always
be a servant leader in the church even when (please God) he is ordained next year to the priesthood.
Archbishop has appointed Jeffrey as the Deacon at the Parish of St Raphael in Yeading. This is a parish near to
the Heathrow Airport and I am sure he will be happy and have a great ministry.
